WOFA Podcast: Author and international airline pilot Captain Geoff Hay

written by WOFA | May 24, 2019

This edition of the Australian Aviation podcast features an interview with Captain Geoff Hay.  Like many, Hay enjoyed a fulfilling career prior to becoming a full-time aviator. In his first job after leaving school, Hay trained and practised as a nurse and worked extensively in the operating theatre.

Recently Hay released his first book on human factors called Ladies and Gentlemen this is your Surgeon speaking.  The book takes a look at modern-day pilot training, particularly in the area of human factors or the science of why we do what we do.

Captain Hay is uniquely placed in these fields currently in his role as an international airline pilot, with some 30 years of aviation experience, the last 18 years as a training captain. His book examines how humans perform under stress in terms of decision making, teamwork, leadership, situational awareness and communication.

Hay draws on his experience from the flightdeck to the operating theatre in terms of chain of command, use of technology and the pressures faced by both professional spheres. This is a deep dive into human factors and the science behind why we do what we do.
