Essendon Football Club will build a $26 million new home at Melbourne Airport under a plan approved by the federal government.

The federal government has approved Essendon Football Club’s plan to build its $26 million new home at Melbourne Airport.

The plan will have no significant impact on aviation at the airport and is not expected to impact traffic in the area, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said in a statement announcing approval of the plan.

The proposed facility will include two ovals on a 10-hectare site, as well as a training and administration building, car parking and a basketball court, pool and gymnasium. The facility will be used by paralympians and other local athletic groups in addition to the Bombers footie club.

The federal government has pitched in $6 million toward the tab, while the Victorian state government has put up $1.7 million and is being lobbied for more.
