Boeing has delivered its 7000th 737 aircraft, a 737-800 to budget carrier FlyDubai.

Since entering airline service in 1968, Boeing says the single aisle 737 has become the most popular airliner in history with total orders exceeding 9300 aircraft. That includes more than 900 orders for the new 737 MAX, a re-engined version scheduled to begin deliveries in 2017. More than 5400 737s are already in service worldwide, according to Boeing.

The milestone comes days after rival Airbus announced that it had delivered its 7000th aircraft, an A321 for US Airways.
