Virgin Australia has created a separate business division for its Velocity Frequent Flyer program and has appointed former Qantas executive Neil Thompson as CEO of the new branch.

Virgin said the move reflected its increasing focus on its frequent flyer program.

“The Velocity Frequent Flyer program is critical to Virgin Australia’s goal of becoming the airline of choice in Australia and we are confident this new structure will help us achieve that,” Virgin CEO John Borghetti said.

Thompson held a number of senior position at Qantas before leaving as Group General Manager of Loyalty Marketing in 2008. Subsequent to that he worked at a US company that advises airlines on frequent flyer programs.
