Qantas to leave BlackBerry for iPhone

written by australianaviation.com.au | July 17, 2012
Qantas will ditch its fleet of BlackBerrys in favour of iPhones.

Qantas will ground its fleet of 1300 BlackBerrys in favour of the iPhone, an airline official has said.

The move — more bad news for struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion — comes in response to a recent staff survey indicating a strong preference for the Apple smartphone, Qantas chief information officer Paul Jones told The Australian. Air crews will be among the first to get iPhones, which will be phased in across the company.

Jones said the switch would save the company money. IBM Australia said it expected to save as much as $1.4 million when it ditched its 500 BlackBerrys earlier this year.

Qantas employees would also be able to use Android smartphones on a ‘bring-your-own’ basis, Mr Jones said.
