If you were hoping to spend your next long haul flight listening to the person next to you talk on the phone, you may want to book on Emirates.
The Dubai-based Qantas suitor has launched in-flight mobile phone services on one of its A380s and plans to roll out the service across its A380 fleet over the coming months. The system, provided by OnAir, allows passengers to make and receive phone calls and text messages using EDGE/GPRS connections through their mobile service provider.
Emirates already provides mobile phone service through other providers on some 300 flights per day, while all the carrier’s A380 are equipped with an OnAir provided WiFi service.
The first A380 equipped with mobile phone service departed Dubai for Munich on October 2, with the first phone call put through to China as the aircraft cruised at 38,000ft over the Gulf.
