Toulouse witnessed the historic delivery of the first new ATR 72-600 aircraft to Uzbekistan’s Silk Avia by Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) alongside ATR, the world’s foremost regional aircraft manufacturer, on 19 February 2024. This event signifies the dawn of a new chapter in regional connectivity within Central Asia.
The aircraft, handed over to NAC by ATR in December 2023, forms part of a contract signed in November 2022 during the visit to Paris by the President of Uzbekistan, Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev. This deal encompasses a total of five new ATR 72-600 aircraft, with two being supplied by NAC and the remaining three directly by ATR.
This delivery marked the first instance of a new ATR aircraft being introduced to Central Asia. The ATR 72-600, known for its cutting-edge technology, superior economy, and unmatched versatility, is set to enhance regional connectivity in Uzbekistan and neighboring nations. Silk Avia, now under the umbrella of Uzbekistan Airways, plans to incorporate these newly acquired aircraft into its current ATR fleet. This move aims to broaden the airline’s coverage to a greater array of destinations and cater to the increasing demand for efficient, low-emission regional air travel.
Shukhrat Khudaykulov, Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Airways, emphasized the airline’s aspirations, stating that Silk Avia “has set an ambitious goal to become a leader in air transportation on domestic routes of the country.” He highlighted the intent to expand the network, increase flight numbers, and optimize operations using the new ATR 72-600. “This type of aircraft will help to provide the necessary conditions for a comfortable flight. Moreover, our common goal, the goal of New Uzbekistan, is to make flights affordable and develop domestic tourism of the country. It will undoubtedly be achieved through flights on ATR brand turboprop aircraft.”
Norman C.T. Liu, President & CEO of NAC, welcomed Silk Avia to their customer base and expressed his pleasure in delivering the inaugural new ATR 72-600 to the airline.
Alexis Vidal, ATR’s SVP Commercial, also shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We warmly welcome Silk Avia to the ATR family. Their selection of the ATR 72-600 marks an important step as we begin operations in the promising market of Uzbekistan and wider Central Asia.” He further elaborated on Silk Avia’s trailblazing role in showcasing the substantial benefits of affordable, low-emission regional aviation to this vibrant region. “Our advanced ATR 72-600 turboprops are the ideal solution to connect communities and energise the national economy through their efficiency and flexibility. I look forward to following their progress and growth for many years to come.”
