Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., widely recognized as PHI, a household name in global helicopter services, is celebrating a significant milestone this year. The acclaimed company has announced its 75th anniversary in 2024, marking three-quarters of a century of remarkable advancements and contributions to the aviation sector.
Formed in Lafayette, La., back in 1949 as Petroleum Bell Helicopters and later renamed, PHI started with a modest fleet of three Bell 47 helicopters and a team of seven dedicated individuals. It initially served seismic crews exploring for oil and gas in the marshlands of South Louisiana, an effort that established its foothold as a pioneer in helicopter transportation. Today, the group has transformed into a global powerhouse, known for its comprehensive helicopter solutions across a variety of sectors including energy provision, hospital and air medical services, among others.
Scott McCarty, CEO of PHI Group, reflected on the company’s journey, noting the pioneering spirit that has characterized its operations over the years. “PHI has pioneered many firsts over its 75-year history,” McCarty said. “From being the launch customer for several different airframe types to logging over 12 million flight hours, PHI has a rich history of innovation and performance—one that we’re extremely proud to continue today.”
Currently, PHI’s operations span the globe, with a modern fleet of over 200 helicopters and a workforce exceeding 2,500 employees. Its brand portfolio has also expanded to include various divisions like PHI Aviation, PHI Air Medical, Helipass, and PHI MRO Services catering to diverse needs within the aviation industry.
