Luís Carlos Affonso, the Senior Vice President of Engineering and Technology Development at Embraer, has been honored with the inaugural Pathfinder Award by the Aviation Week Network. This prestigious recognition comes as part of the 66th Laureate Awards, a highly anticipated annual ceremony in the aerospace industry, which took place at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.
Affonso’s significant contributions spanning over 41 years have played a pivotal role in advancing the aerospace sector. Upon receiving the award, Affonso expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is a great honor to be chosen for the first Laureate Pathfinder Award. This recognition is a tribute to all Embraer members and the spirit of one team that makes us fly higher.”
He dedicated the award to his family and the Embraer team, past and present, whose “competence, creativity and passion to make a difference made all our projects possible.” Affonso, who started his journey with Embraer in 1983, has been instrumental in launching and developing new commercial and executive aircraft since the company’s privatisation in 1994.
His leadership has fostered a strong culture within Embraer, inspired by the founders to deliver innovative and safe products. “I am extremely proud of the strong culture we have developed at Embraer,” said Affonso, further acknowledging the key role of employees, leaders, customers, and partners in his journey. Currently leading efforts in sustainable aviation and urban air mobility, Affonso’s work is vital for the future of the industry.
His tenure at Embraer has seen him take on various roles, contributing significantly to the company’s success. From Engineering Director and Chief Engineer to Vice President of Operations and COO of Commercial Aviation, Affonso’s leadership has seen the launch and success of several aircraft families, including the ERJ-145, the E-Jets E1, and the E-Jets E2s.
An experienced glider pilot and holder of a commercial pilot’s license, Affonso’s passion for aviation extends beyond his professional achievements. In addition to his long career at Embraer, Affonso also serves as President of the Board of Directors of EVE Air Mobility, focusing on urban air mobility solutions.
