written by Newsdesk | July 4, 2024

American Airlines has published its 2023 Sustainability Report, detailing efforts to address climate change and decarbonize aviation operations.

The report outlines key initiatives from 2023, including a collaboration with Breakthrough Energy and Google Research on contrail avoidance, which could help reduce the industry’s climate impact.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said: “Thanks to the hard work of our more than 140,000 team members, American continues to deliver for our customers while making strides toward our sustainability goals.”

He added: “There is far more work to be done and many areas where we will continue to rely on policymakers and partnerships to make progress.”

The report focuses on four priority areas: safety, support for team members, customer satisfaction and operational performance, and climate change and fuel efficiency.

Jill Blickstein, American’s Chief Sustainability Officer, stated: “American’s goal to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is the right one, but it won’t be easy.”

She noted: “Our report describes the concrete steps we have taken and sets the stage for the hard work in the years ahead.”

The airline is extending its sustainability commitment to sourcing and procurement practices.

American Airlines has maintained its long-term sustainability goals while acknowledging the challenges in achieving them.

The report aligns with recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures and industry standards developed by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board.

American Airlines emphasizes its commitment to transparency and strong industry standards in sustainability reporting.

The full Sustainability Report is available for public viewing on the company’s website.
