Air New Zealand has treated 50 children with serious medical conditions or disabilities to a special scenic flight over the South Island, continuing its long-standing partnership with the Koru Care charity.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner departed Christchurch on Saturday afternoon, flying over Queenstown and Dunedin before returning to Christchurch after about 90 minutes.
Air New Zealand’s Chief Pilot Captain David Morgan, who was in the flight deck, highlighted the unique nature of the experience.
“It was fantastic to be able to give children who may not have the opportunity to travel overseas the thrill of flying on one of our larger international aircraft, over some of the world’s most stunning scenery right here at home,” Captain Morgan said.
Before takeoff, the young passengers enjoyed a pre-flight party at Christchurch Airport with an ‘Around the World in a Day’ theme, featuring activities inspired by destinations such as New York, Tokyo, Fiji and Sydney.
Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran, who was also onboard, described the event as a “heartwarming reminder of the magic and wonder of flying”.
“The day was a heartwarming reminder of the magic and wonder of flying, and it was an absolute privilege to welcome our Little Stars onboard,” Mr Foran said.
During the flight, each child received a certificate revealing that a star in the sky had been officially named after them.
Koru Care NZ’s Tracey Curran praised Air New Zealand’s ongoing support, saying thousands of Kiwi children have enjoyed unforgettable experiences through the airline’s involvement.
“Air New Zealand has consistently gone above and beyond to make their dreams come true, and this flight was no exception,” Ms Curran said.
The airline has committed to matching the flight’s emissions with carbon credits and providing a donation to projects supporting biodiversity outcomes in New Zealand.
Air New Zealand’s partnership with Koru Care spans more than 40 years, helping to provide memorable experiences for children who might not otherwise be able to travel due to medical conditions or family situations.
