The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has signed an agreement to become a new tenant at Munich Airport’s LabCampus innovation hub.
TUM will occupy approximately 20,400 square metres at the airport site, where it plans to create a “Convergence Center” focused on aviation, mobility, robotics and security research.
The university aims to develop an ecosystem where students, scientists, entrepreneurs, business partners and citizens can collaborate on pioneering projects.
As part of the initiative, TUM will also establish a Sustainable and Future Aviation Center in partnership with Lufthansa and Munich Airport.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, said: “With the expansion of LabCampus to a university location and the partnership between Munich Airport, TUM and Lufthansa, three institutions come together that will not only contribute to the future of the location and the region, but also make a valuable contribution to the sustainability of aviation.”
The TUM facilities are expected to open at LabCampus by the end of 2025.
Nathalie Leroy, CFO of Munich Airport, said: “We are pleased that the Technical University of Munich is bringing such a great initiative to Munich Airport and LabCampus. TUM is an important building block for LabCampus and offers potential for the further development of the concept and the area.”
Leroy added: “LabCampus is so much more than just an office location. It is a place where people meet and exchange ideas.”
With TUM’s tenancy, the LAB 48 and LAB 52 buildings at LabCampus are now almost fully leased, with only 5,000 square metres remaining available.
LabCampus aims to provide international companies, scale-ups and young talents with an environment for collaborative work and cross-sector exchange.
Current tenants at the site include German Air Traffic Control (DFS), AirportAcademy and amplimind.
Exotec is set to move into LAB 48 in autumn 2024, followed by Lufthansa Aviation Training GmbH in early 2025.
The next phase of development at LabCampus includes plans for serviced apartments to be built west of the existing buildings.
