SITA and IDEMIA have joined forces to create an interoperable digital travel system that promises to streamline passenger identification across airports worldwide.
The partnership aims to develop an open trust network allowing travellers’ digital identities to be recognised seamlessly across international borders.
This new ecosystem will connect governments, airports and airlines through a decentralised framework, eliminating the need for direct integration between identity issuers and verifiers.
Jeremy Springall, Senior Vice President of Borders at SITA, said the collaboration was vital for establishing global standards.
“With IDEMIA’s collaboration in the Digital Travel Ecosystem, we’re enhancing the ability of stakeholders to trust a travelers’ digital identity across the entire travel journey,” he said.
The system incorporates privacy-by-design principles developed with Indicio, ensuring passengers maintain control over their personal information.
Travellers will need to provide explicit consent before any data sharing occurs between stakeholders.
Tim Ferris, Senior Vice President of Travel & Transport at IDEMIA Public Security, highlighted the importance of data protection.
“In a world where data privacy concerns are at the forefront, this approach of an interoperable Digital Travel Ecosystem provides a responsible, transparent solution for ensuring how passenger information is shared,” he said.
The collaboration focuses on defining and promoting interoperable biometric and digital systems that can be recognised across various airports and border checkpoints.
This standardised approach aims to reduce operational complexity while improving efficiency for all parties involved in international travel.
The system will enable real-time verification of digital credentials while maintaining security protocols across borders.
