Sweden chooses Embraer C-390 as new military transport in $1.5b NATO upgrade

written by Newsdesk | November 11, 2024

The Swedish Ministry of Defence has selected Brazil’s Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft to modernise its tactical transport fleet, marking the first purchase of the military aircraft in Northern Europe.

The decision made Sweden the sixth European NATO member to acquire the C-390, following Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Netherlands and Portugal.

Embraer Defence & Security president Bosco Da Costa Junior said the selection highlighted the aircraft’s advanced capabilities.

“After several European NATO countries selected the C-390, this decision is a testimony that this multi-mission aircraft represents a tremendous operational capability upgrade compared to previous generation tactical transport aircraft,” he said.

The Brazilian-made aircraft has demonstrated strong performance since entering service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, achieving a mission capability rate of 93 per cent.

The fleet has accumulated more than 15,000 flight hours with mission completion rates above 99 per cent.

Brazil and South Korea have also ordered the C-390 for their defence forces.

The acquisition is expected to enhance Sweden’s interoperability with allied forces while leveraging existing European training facilities and logistics networks.

The deal builds on existing partnerships between Sweden and Brazil’s Embraer, which has delivered more than 9,000 aircraft globally since its founding in 1969.
