Jetstar operated its first flights between Sydney and Melbourne/Tullamarine on October 26, noting that all flights for the day were “completely sold-out”.

“While we expect Jetstar’s new Melbourne-Sydney services to be strongly supported by flyers seeking the lowest fares between Australia’s two largest capitals, Qantas will importantly continue to maintain its high frequency premium offering on the route,” said Jetstar CEO Bruce Buchanan.

As well as the new services to Tullamarine, Jetstar’s flights to Avalon now mean that it operates over 3000 seats between Sydney and Melbourne each week. The carrier now operates five daily services to Tullamarine and four daily services to Avalon.

Jetstar launched services on the business heavy Sydney-Melbourne route following Tiger Airways’s launch of up to five daily services on the same route. Despite the added capacity, Qantas is maintaining its high frequency schedule on the route, which is one of the busiest in terms of passenger traffic in the world.
