The RAAF has commenced C-17 pilot training in Australia with the induction of its first two pilot initial qualification (PIQ) trainees, following last year’s delivery of a C-17 full flight simulator to RAAF Base Amberley.
The simulator, operated by Boeing Defence Australia on contract to the RAAF, will provide 120 simulated flight hours to the trainees, while they will also complete a further 85 hours of computer based training and 145 hours of other instruction over the next 100 days.
The simulator is an element of the C-17 Globemaster III Aircrew Training System (ATS) which also comprises a loadmaster station, a learning centre, and the various support systems, and is the only C-17 simulator located outside of the US.
