Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has approved a Major Development Plan for the western concourse extension at Canberra Airport.
The western concourse extenstion is the second of the two-phase $350 million new multi-level passenger terminal project. The existing terminal will be demolished in stages to make room for the new facility, with the project being undertaken in two stages – the first due for completion mid year is the southern concourse terminal extension, while the second stage western concourse extension is due for completion in 2012.
The new terminal will be up to 40,000 square metres in size, with up to 22 additional check-in counters, eight aerobridges and facilities for international passenger processing.
Canberra Airport currently handles three million passengers per year, a figure that is expected to more than double to 6.3 million by 2029.
