Air New Zealand has announced that its Boeing 777-300ERs will be fitted for inflight connectivity which will allow passengers to use their mobile phones to send and receive text messages as well as access email and the internet on board.
“Customers onboard our new Boeing 777-300 aircraft will be able to use their own GSM/GPRS devices safely when the system is activated during the cruise stage of flight,” airline spokesman Ed Sims said in a statement.
“Passengers will also be requested to keep their phones on ‘silent’ mode.”
Like most carriers rolling out the equipment, Air NZ will disable voice calls while on board the aircraft. The carrier is also awaiting regulatory approval before it launches the service, which is expected to be on its services to the USA, where the 777-300ERs will replace the airline’s remaining 747-400s.
