The aviation fuel excise is increasing under the federal government’s 2010-11 budget from 2.854 to 3.556 cents per litre to increase CASA funding over the next four years by $89.9 million.
The 0.702 cents per litre, or 25 per cent increase in the excise will fund “97 permanent positions for safety specialists, safety analysts and airworthiness inspectors and other staff, allowing CASA to expand its surveillance activities and fulfil its increasingly complex regulatory responsibilities,” the budget portfolio statements for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government reads.
The excise increase will take effect from July 1 2010.
As per the Aviation White Paper, CASA’s regulatory fees it can recover from the aviation industry will remain capped at $15 million per annum, subject to inflation adjustments.
Overall, CASA will have a budget of $170 million for 2010-11, up from $154 million in 2009-10, with employee numbers increasing from 671 to 782.
