Lufthansa took delivery of its first of 15 Airbus A380s in a ceremony at Airbus’s Hamburg facilities on May 19.
More than 700 guests were on hand to witness the official handover ceremony for Rolls-Royce Trent 900 powered A380 MSN038 D-AIMA, which has been named Frankfurt am Main, at Airbus’s Hamburg-Finkenwerder plant.
“With the A380 Lufthansa today receives its new flagship,” said Airbus president & CEO Tom Enders.
The handover also saw Lufthansa reveal its A380 interior, which seats 526 in a three class layout, with eight first and 98 business class seats on the upper deck, and 420 economy class seats on the main deck.
“In cooperation with Airbus, we have developed many technical solutions regarding the cabin design and furnishings which are being given a world premiere in this aircraft,” said Wolfgang Mayrhuber, chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa. “Our innovations in terms of cabin air, light systems and inflight entertainment make our A380 unique.”
Lufthansa will be the fifth airline to put the A380 into service (behind Singapore, Emirates, Qantas and Air France) when it begins flights between Frankfurt and Tokyo on June 11. The first Lufthansa A380 will also fly the German national soccer team to South Africa on June 6 for the World Cup.
