Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has attacked the Coalition for referring legislation to increase aviation fuel excise to boost CASA’s resources to a Senate committee.
“The Federal Coalition’s decision to refer the legislation off to a Senate committee is yet another example of their bloody minded opposition to everything, particularly given it has already been extensively scrutinised,” said Minister Albanese, adding that the legislation had already passed two bipartisan Senate committees and the Economic Legislation Committee.
The legislation under debate would see the excise on aviation fuel rise from $0.02854 to $0.03556 per litre. The government says that this would allow CASA to employ 97 additional aviation safety staff, including inspectors, expand training for its current staff, and continue to fund the Office of Airspace Regulation.
