written by WOFA | November 28, 2010

F-111s are making their final flights.

The RAAF’s F-111 is making its final public displays during its final week of operations.

On Monday November 29, two F-111s will visit the Sydney region, flying over RAAF Richmond between 1.00 and 1.30pm, and then Sydney Harbour between 1.30 and 2.00pm.

Also on November 29, between 11.30am and 2.30pm F-111s will fly over several southern Queensland and northern NSW towns that have had an affinity with the jet which frequently flew at low level in these areas on training missions over the years.

On December 3, the aircraft’s last day on operations, at least four F-111s will launch from Amberley and fly over Ipswich, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast between 11.30am and 1.15pm, before landing back at Amberley for the final time at around 12.45pm. The final aircraft will be greeted at Amberley with a water cannon salute before shut down, after which the type will be retired from service.

On November 27 an F-111 performed a dump and burn over the Ipswich Christmas Carols.

Several F-111s are expected to be retained for display, with two examples set aside for Amberley and one each for Williamtown and Edinburgh, as well as the F-111G already at the RAAF Museum at Point Cook.
