Virgin Blue has announced it will double its planned Airbus A330-200 fleet to four aircraft in early 2012, when two further aircraft will join the initial two due to enter service next May.

All four aircraft will operate on transcontinental services to and from Perth.

“These aircraft will be dedicated to domestic long haul services between the East Coast and Perth,” said Virgin Blue Group of Airlines CEO and MD John Borghetti. “We expect to take delivery of the third and fourth A330s in early 2012. The widebodied A330 will appeal to both the leisure and corporate customer.”

Virgin Blue originally announced plans to acquire two leased A330-200s in August.
