Record 2010 for Newcastle after slow start

written by WOFA | January 24, 2011

Newcastle Airport set a new passenger traffic record in 2010, with a total of 1,181,261 passengers passing through its terminal last year.

The 2010 figure represents an increase of four per cent or 45,700 when compared with 2009, and comes despite a sluggish first six months period. In the second half of the year total passenger numbers increased by 10 per cent or 57,000 passengers when compared with the same period in 2009.

Newcastle Airport CEO Paul Hughes said that the final annual passenger figures had “exceeded our original expectations”, helped in part by the introduction of an extra daily service to the Gold Coast in July and to Melbourne in December, with major events such as the RAAF Airshow and commencement of P&O Cruises from Newcastle also contributing to the boost in passenger numbers.
