Virgin Blue has cancelled its Newcastle to Gold Coast service, with its last regular flight between Newcastle and the Gold Coast operating today.

“We’re seeing this more as a general response to the Virgin Blue strategy of moving into the business market,” Newcastle Airport CEO Paul Hughes told the ABC.

“But it’s also on the back of last year we saw Jetstar go to double daily on the Gold Coast, so we’re actually seeing more capacity on the Gold Coast route,” Hughes continued

“Gold Coast is very much a leisure route.”
