Tiger Airways Australia started flying from its new Sydney base on July 1, with plans to ramp up its presence in Australia as it recovers from its grounding last year.

Tiger is initially operating up to four daily services between Sydney and the Gold Coast, and will use the new base to bolster ferquencies to Melbourne and Brisbane. By the start of September it will have three A320s based in Sydney, while an additional aircraft will be delivered to its Melbourne headquarters in August.

To celebrate the launch of the new base, the airline released 10,000 seats at $10 on the Sydney-Melbourne route, and also launched a sale on its other routes.

“Our formative years are behind us,” said Tiger Airways Australia CEO Andrew David. “Tiger has grown and we are now moving on with a great value service that all Australian travelers should try at least once. The million plus domestic passengers who have flown with us since we resumed operations have provided overwhelming support for the relaunched product.”

The airline is expected to announce more routes over the coming six months, and follows on from a recent fare sale across large parts of its network, with even saw longer routes such as Melbourne-Cairns on sale from $69.95 one way.

With Tiger now placing a greater importance on competing in the domestic market, it is expected that there may be a fare war brewing between it and Jetstar, while the added capacity is also likely to have an impact on Virgin and Qantas.
