A year after officially ending the program, Airbus has sold its last two A340s.
UK-based AJW Capital has signed contracts for the A340-500s, which will enter service in 2013 with an undisclosed airline. The aircraft were believed to have been built for India’s Kingfisher Airlines before the airline fell into financial difficulty.
Just 34 of the ultra long haul (8,500nm+ range) A340-500 were built, alongside 97 of the larger, 379-seat A340-600, but the types failed to effectively compete with Boeing’s 777-200LR and 777-300ER, respectively. In all, 377 A340s of all variants were built.
