The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has unveiled an initiative that distils investigation findings trends in occurrences into a single website for benefit of continual safety improvement.
ATSB chief commissioner Martin Dolan said: “Our strong reporting culture and rigorous investigations means that when an accident or incident does happen, we’re in a good position to prevent it from happening again.
“The information we receive from occurrence reports and our investigation findings allows the ATSB to monitor overall trends in transport safety. From these trends, we can determine the main risk areas or priorities currently facing Australian transport,” Dolan commented when inaugurating Safety Watch.
The information contained in Safety Watch, which is featured on the ATSB’s website, includes among others safety around non-towered aerodromes and approach handling. Both areas have demanded higher levels of investigation in recent years, hence their inclusion on the site as areas of greater risk and concerning trend.
This commendable initiative will, in the view of Australian Aviation, draw – as it should – significant interest and comment.
And in another initiative, chief commissioner Dolan has also launched a blog, dubbed ‘In Focus’ on the ATSB website.
Dolan writes in his first post: “I aim to use this forum to discuss the important issues facing transport safety in Australia. This blog is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions and contribute to a conversation on transport safety.”
