The F-111 arrives at HARS.

The world’s last operational F-111C bomber has arrived at the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) facilities at Illawarra Regional Airport near Wollongong.

Designated A8-109, the aircraft left RAAF Base Amberley on a low-loader in the early hours of April 6, reaching HARS three days later.

A8-109 is ex-United States Air Force and saw combat in Vietnam before being purchased by RAAF in 1982. With its engines shutdown for the final time on December 3 2010, following a flying display at the F-111 retirement ceremony, A8-109 became the world’s last operational F-111.

The aircraft is being reassembled with the assistance of F-111 disposal team members. Reassembly involves reattaching the wings, tail fin and horizontal stabilators and final preparations for public display.
