Boeing projects a demand for 5,580 new airliners in China over the next 20 years. In its newly-released China Current Market Outlook, the manufacturer forecasts the country’s fleet to triple in size, with orders valued at US$780 billion.

Long-haul international traffic to and from China is forecasted to grow at an annual rate of 7.2 per cent. The international growth is primarily driven by anticipated passenger traffic between China and North America, Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and Africa. This growth in the long-haul segment, says Boeing, is expected to result in demand for an additional 1,440 new fuel-efficient widebodies, such as the 787, 777 and 747-8.

Tourism in China and intra-Asia travel will help spur a strong demand for single-aisle aircraft, with total deliveries in that segment reaching 3,900 through to 2032.

Total aircraft orders from China would account for 16 per cent of worldwide aircraft orders during the next two decades. In detail, the outlook reports:

Regional jets up to 90 seats – 240

Single-aisle up to 230 seats – 3,900

Small wide-body up to 300 seats – 730

Medium widebody up to 400 seats – 610

Large widebody more than 400 seats – 100

“Thanks to strong economic growth and increased access to air travel, we project China traffic to grow at nearly 7 percent each year,” said Boeing’s Randy Tinseth.

“To compete in the long-haul international market, our Chinese customers are focused on growing their international networks, increasing their capacity and building resources,” he added.

Boeing aircraft represent more than 50 percent of all airliners operating in China. Some 7,000 Boeing airplanes fly throughout the world with integrated China-built parts and assemblies. China has a component role on every current Boeing commercial airplane model.
