Stefan Pichler has taken up his role as CEO of Fiji Airways, taking leadership of the airline as it completes its re-positioning and wrestles with financial challenge.

Pichler, who was previously head of Jazeera Airways where he turned that company around to make it one of the industry’s most profitable carriers, said: “The combination of a strong brand, new fleet of A330-200s and refurbished 737s, as well as improved schedules and services opens up an exciting new chapter for the airline.”

Re-branded as Fiji Airways in June this year, the airline is recovering from record losses three years ago. In July the airline reported an after tax profit of FJ$14.1 million on increased revenues of FJ$660 million. The airline and its subsidiary Pacific Sun fly to 15 destinations in 10 countries and carries more than 60 per cent of all visitors flying to Fiji. Earlier this year Fiji Airways announced increased flights to Australia, New Zealand, Los Angeles and Hong Kong

From 2004, Pichler played a pivotal role as chief commercial officer in Virgin Blue’s transformation from a low cost carrier to a network airline.
