Raytheon and Norway’s Kongsberg Gruppen have announced at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow they have signed an agreement to jointly develop the anti-ship Joint Strike Missile (JSM).
A development of Kongsberg’s land and ship-launched Naval Strike Missile (NSM), the JSM is designed to be air-launched against surface targets and is small enough to be carried inside the F-35A/C Lightning II’s weapons bay. The NSM is in service with Norway and also Poland.
The development of the JSM has already been funded by the Norwegian government, as will the weapon’s integration with the F-35. It is unclear what role Raytheon will play in the JSM’s development, although the company has a substantial catalogue of anti-air and anti-surface weapons and sensors already, and it may also take the lead in marketing the JSM to the US government.
