Qantas will add an extra flight to Hawaii from December 20, when it will fly four times a week from Sydney to Honolulu, up from three currently.
Qantas executive manager of global sales and offshore operations Stephen Thompson said Honolulu was one of the airline’s most popular destinations and demand continued to grow.
“Increasing capacity to Honolulu delivers on our strategy to be more flexible and respond to market conditions,” Thompson said in a statement on Friday. “We will continue to adjust our schedules to take advantage of seasonal revenue opportunities.”
Qantas said previously Airbus A330s (initially A330-300s and then A330-200s) will replace the Boeing 767-300ER currently flying the route from September. The extra frequency, coupled with the aircraft change, adds 253 more seats per week on the route.
Qantas is progressively retiring its 767s as there are replaced by A330-200s being transferred across from Jetstar, which in turn is replacing its A330s with 787s.
Qantas said the number of Australians visiting Hawaii rose by 24.3 per cent to more than 300,000 in 2013. Jetstar and Hawaiian Airlines also serve the Sydney-Hawaii route.
Meanwhile in other Qantas news, the airline said refurbishments to its Qantas Club in Darwin were almost complete and the facility was due to open in late September.
The lounge will seat 350 passengers and was double the size from the old Qantas Club, the airline said in a statement.
