Brisbane Airport’s Master Plan receives government approval

Brisbane Airport’s Master Plan has received the green light from the Federal Government.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss says the planned upgrades to the airport over the next 20 years contained in the Master Plan “will be key to easing congestion and increasing capacity”.

Brisbane Airport has commenced work on a new parallel runway, while a regional satellite facility, upgraded terminal facilities and improved road and transport networks are also on the cards for the next two decades.

“Brisbane Airport is one of Australia’s fastest growing passenger and freight airports,” Truss said in a statement.

“The proposed infrastructure investments will provide benefits to the local, state, regional and national economies.”

The new parallel runway, part of the estimated $3.8 billion investment in infrastructure between now and 2034, was due to be completed in 2020 and would give Brisbane Airport the same level of capacity as Singapore and Hong Kong.

Brisbane Airport Corporation chief executive Julieanne Alroe said the Master Plan would ensure the airport was able to accommodate the expected doubling of passenger numbers to around 48 million by 2034.


“We are very pleased the Australian Government has approved our 20 year vision for Brisbane Airport which will help us achieve our goal of becoming a more important gateway for Australia in the future,” Ms Alroe said in a statement.

The airport has 50 days to publicly release its Master Plan.

    Congratulations to Brisbane Airport and the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

    These are the sort of decisions and in particular, infrastructure development, we need to keep Australia moving forward!

    Bring it on! I can’t wait for the second runway to be built. All be need is a decent State Government to upgrade the Bruise Highway and Gateway Motorway along with upgrading the railway lines and introducing new trains to keep up with this demand. I hope Qantas will start flying their A380s on a regular basis in and out of Brisbane along with buying a medium fleet of Boeing 747-8s and a very small fleet of Boeing 777s. Also any idea when Qantas will be getting their 787-9s?

    I note with interest that the photo heading this article is actually of the car park and not the terminal; a car park that has some of the most expense car-parking in Australia.

    During Christmas, this car park was so full that space was taken back from staff car parks for the public to park! Pity about those that have to work there.

    I’ve heard it’s almost cheaper to park a King Air at BNE than to park a car!
