Royal Australian Air Force personnel at RAAF Base East Sale have hosted a group of young women for the Air Force Flight and Engineering Camp as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

The women, aged between 16 and 18 from around Australia, toured RAAF aircraft such as the C-17A Globemaster and E-7A Wedgetail, took part in leadership activities and physical training, and had a session in a F/A-18 Hornet simulator.

They were also given an up-close look at the day-to-day routines of those living and working on an airbase.

Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Geoff Brown AO said he hoped the participants’ experience at RAAF Base East Sale would inspire them to consider a career in the Air Force.

“Air Force Flight Camps provide young women with an opportunity to experience Air Force life – with a focus on non-traditional work opportunities in air crew, technical trades and engineering,” AIRMSHL Brown said in a statement on Thursday.

“Meeting these young women, and seeing how motivated they are to succeed, makes me confident in the next generation of youth.”

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Darren Chester said the flight camps were a great initiative.

“It was great to see the interest from these young women as we toured the latest RAAF aircraft types,” Chester said in a statement.

“These young women are highly motivated and interested in aviation. I’m sure they will have a bright career ahead of them.”
