Auckland Airport is no stranger to Airbus A380s, given Emirates has three flights a day from Australia with the doubledecker superjumbo and Singapore Airlines also deploys the world’s largest passenger aircraft there on a seasonal basis.
However, the airport received an unexpected visit from an A380 in Qantas colours on Tuesday after the Flying Kangaroo’s QF8 service from Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney was diverted to Auckland due to weather.
With fog blanketing the Sydney basin on Tuesday morning, Qantas A380 VH-OQI headed to Auckland and touched down a little before 0800 local time.
The aircraft was on the ground for about 90 minutes before taking off for the NSW capital shortly after 0920 for the three-hour leg to Sydney.
Also on Tuesday morning, Qantas A380 VH-OQJ operating QF12 from Los Angeles to Sydney was diverted to Brisbane.
