Air New Zealand has followed up “The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made” with a surfing-themed production that features the world’s best hitting the waves at a few of the Pacific’s most iconic locations.
There is also a distinctly Australian flavour in Air NZ’s “Safety Safari”, with three-time world champion Mick Fanning and shots of Queensland’s Gold Coast featured in the airline’s newest safety video.
“A few of my mates will probably wind me up for working with a Kiwi airline but through the Air New Zealand safety video I got the opportunity to share some of my favourite local surf spots with everyone,” Fanning said in a statement on Thursday.
“On its day the Gold Coast has some of the best surfing anywhere in the world. It’s been fantastic to be show off this iconic location.”
The safety video was also shot at Malibu, California, and Raglan and Piha in New Zealand.
In addition to Fanning, the airline recruited current men’s surfing world champion Gabriel Medina, American big wave surfers Laird Hamilton and Anastasia Ashley, American Alana Blanchard and Japanese surf legend Masatoshi Ohno, as well as Kiwis Ricardo Christie, Paige Hareb and Maz Quinn for the safety video.
Flight attendants Kellie and Teio round out the cast.
Hamilton said NZ had some of the best surfing conditions in the world.
“I hope my time on the waves at Raglan inspires those thousands of surfers around the world who have dreamed of heading down under to pack up their boards and do a road trip around the country,” Hamilton said.
Like previous safety videos, which have featured Bear Grylls’ walking through Routeburn Track on NZ’s south island or Sports Illustrated models enjoying the Cook Islands, Air NZ head of global brand development Jodi Williams expected the Surfing Safari to help promote tourism while delivering the required safety messages on board.
“Previous safety videos have done a fantastic job in selling seats and driving tourism flows,” Williams said in a statement.
