Improved flying conditions have allowed the first flights from Australia to Bali to take off in more than five days, starting with Jetstar’s JQ47 departing Brisbane early Monday morning.
Both Jetstar and Virgin Australia have suspended service to Bali in recent days due to the ash cloud from the Mount Raung volcano eruptions making conditions unsafe for flying. However, improved weather conditions have allowed flights to again operate.
Jetstar was first out of the blocks with Boeing 787-8 VH-VKA operating as JQ47 taking off from Brisbane at 0904 local time, according to the airline’s website, with a scheduled 1330 arrival in Bali.
The Qantas-owned low-cost carrier planned to operate six flights to Bali on Monday, with five return services from the Indonesian city to Australia also scheduled.
“We’re pleased to advise that as a result of improving flying conditions near Denpasar Airport, we are currently planning to recommence daylight operations to and from Bali from 0800 AEST Monday 10 August,” Jetstar said in a statement on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Virgin Australia cancelled eight flights to and from Bali that were due to operate on Monday.
However, the airline said two flights, one afternoon departure from Adelaide and one overnight service from Bali to Melbourne would be able to fly, adding that there would be extra services scheduled for Tuesday to help clear the backlog of passengers.
“On advice from our team of meteorologists, Virgin Australia is pleased to confirm conditions in the vicinity of Denpasar Airport are now favourable and it is safe to resume flights,” Virgin said on Monday.
“As a result of this advice, Virgin Australia will operate all day and night time flights between Australia and Denpasar tomorrow, Tuesday 11 August 2015.”
