The potential Defence applications of augmented reality visualisation technology have been showcased through a demonstration of holographic software developed by Saab Australia and the Microsoft HoloLens holographic computer.
The event was conducted as an initiative of the Jericho Dawn program of demonstrations, which forms part of the Royal Australian Air Force’s Plan Jericho transformation effort, in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Group. More than 50 representatives of Defence and industry participated in various simulations.
Trying the technology for the first time, Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Leo Davies said that the adoption and exploitation of technologies such as the HoloLens are part of the RAAF’s transition into a fifth-generation fighting force.
“How we communicate, visualise and explore problems and ultimately reach solutions will be heavily influenced by technology such as [augmented reality visualisation],” he said on October 26.
“It is important, through initiatives such as Jericho Dawn, that Air Force continues to innovate and adapt to evolving technologies to ensure we grow the skills and experience to shape them to our needs.”
Saab Australia is being provided with funding through the Jericho Dawn program and DST Group to design tools for DST Group to demonstrate the future of this capability for the RAAF.
