Grant Bradley from The New Zealand Herald has taken out the aviation journalist of the year award for 2016 at the Australasian Aviation Press Club (AAPC) awards, while Australian Aviation and Runway Girl Network contributor John Walton was named runner up in that category.
The pair also finished one-two in the aviation multimedia story of 2016 category, with Bradley winning for his piece titled “Cathay shows off latest addition to its fleet” and Walton the runner up for his “online real-time coverage of the Farnborough Airshow”.
It was a night of accolades for Bradley, who was also also runner up in the New Zealand aviation news story of 2016 for “AKL-LAX fare war begins”.
The awards were presented at the annual dinner of the AAPC in Sydney on Friday November 25.
Among the other winners, The Australian Financial Review’s Michael Smith took out the Australian news story of the year for his piece “Virgin hires John Thomas in management restructure”.
The defence story of the year category went to Trevor Thomas, for his article in Australian Aviation’s sister publication Australian Defence Business Review “Inside the Defence White Paper – Part 2”.
Photographer and Australian Aviation contributor Seth Jaworski received the photographer of the year award, while Tom Ballantyne took out the aviation technical story of 2016 for his article in Orient Aviation titled “Airlines ignore the big data bandwagon at their peril”.
Jamie Freed, writing for The Australian Financial Review, received the New Zealand Aviation news story of 2016 for her story “Air New Zealand faces headwinds as competition increases”. Freed is now a senior companies news correspondent at Thompson Reuters.
And AirlineRatings.com Steve Creedy’s piece “MH370 – Now for the facts” was judged aviation feature story of 2016.
