Current Sydney Airport chief financial officer (CFO) Hugh Wehby will have responsibility for the airport’s operations and the potential opportunity at the proposed Badgerys Creek airport from Janauary 2017 after being named the company’s new chief operating officer (COO).

Sydney Airport said in a statement on Tuesday that Wehby’s appointment to COO was prompted by the resignation of the executive director for aviation services Shelley Roberts, who has resigned to take up an “external CEO role”.

“Hugh will assume all responsibilities related to the aviation business including safety, security, service delivery, airline relationships, aviation business development, long-term master planning and consideration of the Western Sydney Airport opportunity,” Sydney Airport said in a regulatory filing to the Australian Securities Exchange on Tuesday.

“We thank Shelley for her substantial contribution to Sydney Airport over the past five years.”

Sydney Airport said Roberts, formerly Tiger Airways Australia chief executive and currently a non-executive director at online travel group Webjet, was staying on until January 2017 to ensure a seamless transition. Her new role was not disclosed.

Webhy was appointed Sydney Airport CFO in 2014, having previously been its head of strategy and capital projects with responsibility for investor relations as well.
