The Australian Airports Association (AAA) has opened nominations for its annual awards, which in 2019 includes a new community engagement category.

The community engagement award aimed to recognise the work of airports within their local communities, such as terminal installations, unique charity fundraising, airport open days, sponsorship or corporate giving activities, the AAA said in a statement on Monday.

The new award joins existing categories covering regional airports and aerodromes as well as major, metropolitan and capital city airports.

There is also the Airport Innovation and Excellence category which will awarded in the areas of customer service, non-aeronautical development, community engagement, environmental management, commercial, operations, infrastructure development and technology.

Also, there are two corporate project of the year awards, one for regional airports and another for major, metropolitan and capital city airports.

“The calibre of entries to these annual awards never cease to amaze us and every year we look forward to showcasing the excellent work of airports across the country,” AAA chief executive Caroline Wilkie said in a statement.

“It is great to see so many airports investing to create an easy, seamless and memorable experience for their passengers, while also improving efficiency for airlines.
