Official Top Gun: Maverick trailer released

Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer of the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick movie set to hit theatres in 2020.

Tom Cruise, who has reprised his role as United States Navy captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the original Top Gun movie from 1986, launched the trailer at the San Diego Comic Con on Thursday (US time).

The trailer showed Cruise flying an F/A-18, wearing a pressure suit and arguing with his superior, played by Ed Harris.

Cruise described the sequel to the 1986 original as a “a love letter to aviation”, according to The Guardian.

“For 34 years you guys have been very patient with me and I felt it was my responsibility for me to deliver for you,” Cruise said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Everything you see in this film is very real.”

In addition to Cruise and Harris, the cast of also includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Lewis Pullman. Val Kilmer also reprises his role from the original film.

Top Gun: Maverick has been in development since 2010 and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Tencent Pictures, TC Productions and Skydance Media. It was scheduled to premiere in theatres on June 26 2020. Paramount Pictures is the distributor.

The original 1986 film, which helped launch Cruise’s career, grossed about US$350 million at the box office. The production had a budget of US$15 million.
