Virgin Australia is celebrating its Velocity frequent flyer program reaching 10 million members by giving away bonus points and status credits.

It was announced on Thursday Velocity has given 10 bonus status credits to each of its 10 million members.

Also, members could claim a share of 10 million points by logging into their account of the Velocity app. Every member that has entered by the end of the promotion period would receive an equal share of 10 million points.

Velocity chief executive Karl Schuster said the frequent flyer program hoped to make it more achievable for members to go on holiday.

He noted research showed 61 per cent of Australian adults went on vacation once or less per year. That represented about 12 million Australians.

“We want to make it easier for them to take a break more often,” Schuster said in a statement on Thursday.

“Our 10 million members celebration offers announced today mean that members can move up the status tiers quicker and also share in more than 10 million points to help them book that next flight with us.

“We have members of all ages, all around the country and we even have a few pets who earn points on their travel.”

Virgin Australia was also offering double points for all flights booked between Thursday October 10 and Sunday October 13.

This was the equivalent of 10 points per A$1 for domestic, trans-Tasman and international short-haul flights, and double points for long-haul flights to Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

In September, Virgin Australia told the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in a regulatory filing it planned to buy back a 35 per cent stake in the Velocity frequent flyer program held by Affinity Equity Partners for $700 million.

The transaction, first announced in July, which was subject to certain conditions including the “finalisation and execution of long form documentation, funding and the group receiving Foreign Investment Review Board approval”.

It was expected to be completed before the end of calendar 2019.
