American Airlines to retire more aircraft than previously planned

written by WOFA | April 2, 2020

American Airlines had already announced its plans to retire the 757 and 767 jets (16 Boeing 767-300s and 34 Boeing 757-200s) in the coming months and years.

But due to the current crisis, American seems to retire even more planes, including 76 Boeing 737-800s, nine Airbus A330-300s, and 20 Embraer E190s.

American Airlines was initially set to retire some of its Boeing 737s in 2019 and 2020, but due to the ongoing 737 MAX grounding, it had been delayed.

As a result, the airline now plans to retire 145 planes immediately.

American also has a further 225 aircraft in its order book, including 53 A321neos, 50 A321XLRs, 76 737 MAX 8s, 21 787-8s, and 22 787-9s.

Last week, World of Aviation reported that American was planning on cutting year-on-year capacity by 70-80 per cent for domestic, and 80-90 per cent for international flights in May to address “record-low customer demand”.

The carrier said the most significant changes to the schedule was the reduction in service to Hawaii, beginning in April.

In response to the new 14-day quarantine rules for travellers flying to Hawaii, American has decided to suspend operations to Kona, Lihue and Maui. The airline will continue to operate one daily flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
