The new Top Gun film has already generated more than $1 billion (US) in revenue, making it the second biggest cinema release post-COVID.
Maverick is already nestled in the top 50 biggest money-making movies of all time, according to Box Office Mojo, and is likely to land in the top 30 should it continue to hold its huge audience.
Last weekend in the US, revenues dropped just 21 per cent despite being in cinemas for more than a month.
Top Gun: Maverick is now already Tom Cruise’s biggest hit and his first motion picture to cross the $1 billion mark.
The film, released 36 years after the original, has won huge praise from critics, with The Daily Telegraph’s Robbie Collin branding it the best studio action film since 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Financial Times’ Danny Leigh arguing its storytelling “reminds you of the best version of old Hollywood”.
It holds a 97 per cent rating from movie ratings aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The original Top Gun was released in 1986, and the sequel takes the action forward more than 30 years.

The film was due to hit cinemas in 2020 but, much like the wider aviation industry, found its release pushed back almost two years into May 2022.
