Vietjet has reached an agreement with Laos to enhance air transport links between Vietnam and Laos, potentially creating up to 2,500 new aviation jobs.
The deal was announced in Vientiane, witnessed by Vietnam’s President To Lam and Laos’ President Thongloun Sisoulith.
Under the agreement, Vietjet will work with Laos’ Department of Civil Aviation to expand air transport activities and implement aviation projects in the country.
The airline plans to establish maintenance and training facilities in Laos, including a Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO) centre and a Vietjet Aviation Academy to train new workers to international standards.
In exchange, Laotian authorities will provide administrative, legal and facility support to help execute the projects.
Vietjet said its expansion in Laos aims to provide affordable flights and quality air services to both Laotian and international tourists visiting the country.
The agreement aligns with goals set out in a 2016 transport cooperation memorandum between the Vietnamese and Laotian governments.
Last year, Vietjet launched a regional aircraft maintenance centre in partnership with Lao Airlines.
The carrier also started its first Vietnam-Laos route earlier this year, connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Vientiane.
This new service offers more travel options between the two countries, with connections to destinations including Australia, India, South Korea, Japan and China.
Vietnam is currently one of Laos’ largest investors, with 255 active projects in the country worth US$5.5 billion across sectors like transport, tourism and technology.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Vietjet’s network within Laos and improve regional connectivity, making it easier for Australian travellers to access Laos and other destinations served by the airline.
