The Department of Defence has released a tender for the disposal of the RAAF’s now retired Caribou fleet and associated spares, although at least two aircraft and numerous parts will be made available to various historical organisations.
“The Caribou has had a long and distinguished history with the Australian Defence Force,” said Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare, who added that the type had seen service in the Vietnam War, as well as numerous relief efforts in Australia and throughout the region.
“Due to the historic significance of the aircraft, we have reserved a number of Caribou components for preservation at RSLs and historical organisations,” he said.
Two Caribou have already been presented to the RAAF Museum at Point Cook and the Australian War Memorial. The tender for the remaining Caribou and their spares closes on March 1 2011 at 12pm ACT local time.
