The trial of new body imaging technology will begin at Melbourne International Airport from Monday, following a “highly successful three week trial” at Sydney Airport, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese has announced.
The body scanner trial, which saw over 4000 scans conducted at Sydney, uses low-energy millimeter-waves to detect metal and non-metal items under clothing, presented on a generic human outline.
“Around 13 million people fly out of Australia’s international airports each year and the trial is part of the government’s commitment to protecting the travelling public and our safe aviation record,” Albanese said in a statement.
The trial at Melbourne is due to take place between September 5 and 30, and will again only be offered to passengers on a voluntary basis.
