Pilots urged to report wirestrikes

written by WOFA | July 2, 2012

A new report from the ATSB shows that between 2003 and 2011, 40 per cent of wirestrike incidents were not reported.

The ATSB has called on pilots to report wirestrike incidents after a recent report showed that there were around 100 incidents which were not reported between 2003 and 2011.

In its study of reporting of wirestrike incidents, the ATSB found that over the nine year period that nearly 40 per cent of wirestrikes were not reported, as is required under the Transport Safety Investigation Act.

“We need to be told when things go wrong, so that we can examine what happened and see what needs to be done to improve future safety,” said chief commissioner Martin Dolan.

Wirestrikes occur when an aircraft operating at low level flies into a powerline or cable.

The ATSB says that it will engage in a wide range of activities to increase awareness of the importance of reporting wirestrikes.
